USAID helped a local NGO rebuild the last floating mill in Croatia and develop rural tourism.
BEFORE River mill in 1902. Traditional milling died with the last mill in the 1980s.
AFTER Today, this mill is unique in Croatia and there are only two others in Europe - in Austria and Slovenia.
Floating Mill Restored to Life
During the last century over 90 river mills were used to grind corn, wheat and rye for entire villages on the Mura river, located in northern Croatia. By 1980, this local tradition disappeared all together.
USAID and other donors supported Lipa, an environmental association, to develop rural tourism and preserve heritage. The last floating mill, built in 1902 was found in very poor condition. Over 30 civil engineering students from a local high school and ten summer camp volunteers took part in restoring this mill that is unique in Croatia.
oday, this mill serves as an information center and starting point for Mura river tours. It also preserves local tradition -grinding flour that is sold to tourists as a souvenir
